What is a tsunami?
A tsunami is a series of powerful and destructive ocean waves. These
waves can:
- be up to 100 kilometres long
- range in height from a few centimetres to several metres
- be as close as 5 minutes apart or as far as 1 hour apart
- cross the open ocean at almost 1000 kilometres per hour (as fast
as a commercial jet)
- harm people and cause great damage when they come ashore
