EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TRAINING

The Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) offers a schedule of sponsored emergency management training courses throughout the province through its regional offices. As of April 1, 2009, the British Columbia Association of Emergency Managers (BCAEM) is sponsoring the emergency management training courses formerly sponsored by the PEP. The PEP will continue to provide for emergency management training courses by coordinating schedules, course locations, and registrations through our regional offices.

Training is provided to B.C. emergency managers and responders, including: municipal, provincial, and federal staff, First Nations and Public Safety Lifeline volunteers. The training is provided through the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC).

These one and two-day courses support participants’ understanding of important functional areas related to emergency management in their jurisdiction. This training also aims to increase the understanding of roles and responsibilities of government and non-government agencies in an escalating emergency situation.

Several introductory and pre-requisite courses are available on-line oriented to emergency management personnel, first responders and public safety lifeline volunteers. These courses include: Introduction to Emergency Management in B.C., Introduction to Emergency Social Services, Emergency Operations Centre Level 1, Emergency Operation Centre Operational Guidelines and Incident Command System 100 Level. (Participants may be asked to pay for course manuals.)

British Columbia Emergency Response Management System Training
Inter-agency Emergency Preparedness Council (IEPC)

Standards have been developed for potential provincially-approved B.C. Emergency Response Management System (BCERMS) training providers.

The standards document, entitled Standards for BCERMS Training Providers and BCERMS Training Materials,[PDF] was developed by the Inter-agency Emergency Preparedness Council (IEPC), a committee of representatives from provincial ministries, Crown corporations and major utilities.

Approved training providers may use existing IEPC-approved materials, or may develop their own materials. Once a BCERMS training provider has been approved by the IEPC or new BCERMS training materials have been IEPC-approved, the provider may use the IEPC logo and the provider's name and/or materials will be added to the regularly updated approved BCERMS training providers and training materials list.
