Significant occurrences:
1. SWE Region - 15 Aug. - UPDATE, Bul.#3400, item 4 refers. A total
of 56 Pemberton SAR along with 63 registered community
volunteers took part in the search last week in
addition to the 9 reported on last weeks SAR Report.
During the week of 21 to 27 August 1 Pemberton SAR
member each day checked the net strung across the river
with nil results. On 26 August 3 Pemberton SAR,
1 Sunshine Coast SAR plus 2 registered volunteers
cleared all equipment from river and SAR was closed
without locating the missing girl.
2. NWE Region - 21 Aug. - 8 Terrace SAR members responded to assist
RCMP in search for 2 overdue male teenage mushroom
pickers near Nass Camp, 15 km north of New Aiyansh.
The two males were located. They were wet, tired but
otherwise okay.
3. SWE Region - 21 Aug. - 8 Lions Bay SAR members responded to assist
RCMP in rescue of an injured hiker on the Lions Trail,
above Lions Bay. The injured hiker was located, brought
down to base camp and given rudimentary first aid for a
stressed knee.
4. SWE Region - 22 Aug. - 2 Squamish SAR members responded to assist
RCMP in investigating a flare sighting in the Elfin
Lakes, Garibaldi Park area. Nothing found and there
were no further flare sightings or reports of missing
persons. Incident concluded.
5. SWE Region - 22 Aug. - 46 SAR members from Lytton, Pemberton, Lions
Bay, North Shore Rescue, PEP Air, Ridge Meadows,
Sunshine Coast, and Surrey responded to assist RCMP
in search for a missing 52-year-old male hiker in the
Lizzie Creek, Stein Valley area. Male was located on
the east side of Tundra Lake. He was hungry and
thirsty but suffered no medical problems.
6. VIR Region - 23 Aug. - 14 Comox Valley SAR members responded to
assist RCMP in locating a missing despondent 18 year
old male on Hornby Island. SAR team was stood down
before they reached the island as RCMP had located
the male.
7. VIR Region - 23 Aug. - 15 Lake Cowichan SAR members responded to
search for a 14 year old male last seen on an inner
tube on the Cowichan River. Male was located in the
Skutz Falls area, wet and cold but otherwise okay.
8. CTL Region - 24 Aug. - 3 Kelowna SAR members responded to assist
RCMP in rescue of person overboard and boat in
distress in the Okanagan Lake. Male made it safely
to shore.
9. VIR Region - 24 Aug. - 18 Campbell River and 6 Comox Valley SAR
members responded to assist RCMP in locating a
70 year old male missing on a day hike near Ralph
River in Strathcona Park. Male was located safe and
sound near trailhead. He had become disorientated.
10. SEA Region - 24 Aug. - 7 Kimberley SAR members responded to
assist RCMP in search for 3 tubers missing in the
Kootenay River. They were located cold but in good
condition. Their tube had popped and they spent the
night in the bush.
11. CTL Region - 24 Aug. - 8 Penticton SAR members responded to
assist RCMP in search for a missing female swimmer in
Okanagan Lake. Female was located safe and sound.
12. NWE Region - 24 Aug. - 2 Dease Lake SAR members responded to
assist RCMP with search for a PLB sounding in
Telegraph Creek area, Dease Lake. PLB was registered
to Conservation Officers (2 males and 1 female missing).
The Conservation Officers had encountered 5 kayakers
who had flipped over in the Stikine River on
23 August 00. In order to ensure that the kayakers
were rescued, the Conservation Officers left one of
their boats with the kayakers and activated the PLB on
board. They then continued down river in search for
two other kayakers that were reported to be still in
the river. The two missing kayakers were found
onshore and rescued by a private boat (the
"Breakwater" out of Wrangell, Alaska which happened to
be coming upriver. The "Breakwater" carried all five
kayakers back to Telegraph Creek.
13. SWE Region - 24 Aug. - 2 PEP Air members responded to assist RCC
in search for an ELT sounding at the Vancouver
Airport. No signal was found.
14. SWE Region - 24 Aug. - 15 Coquitlam SAR members responded to
assist BCAS in rescue of an elderly male at Buntzen
Lake. Male was complaining of shortness of breath
and chest pains. Male was given oxygen and slowly
walked out to awaiting ambulance and transported to
hospital.
15. SWE Region - 24 Aug. - Pemberton SAR members responded to assist
BCAS with rescue of an injured hiker who had
sustained a broken leg. Male was successfully brought
out of area to an awaiting ambulance and transported
to clinic.
16. SWE Region - 25 Aug. - Pemberton SAR members responded to search
for a missing female hiker in the Stein River Valley.
Hiker walked out on her own at the Lytton end of the
trail.
17. SWE Region - 25 Aug. - Over 3 days there was a total of 54
searchers from Pemberton, Ridge meadows, Lion's Bay
and Squamish SAR teams responded to search for a male
missing in the Salal Creek area 70 kms northwest of
Pemberton. Other than camp and fishing gear, no sign
of the missing male was found.
18. CTL Region - 26 Aug. - 2 Kelowna Water SAR responded to report of
2 sailboats in trouble on Okanagan Lake. Kelowna
Water Rescue was unable to find any sailboats in
difficulty.
19. SWE Region - 26 Aug. - 6 Squamish SAR responded to assist an
injured hiker in Garibaldi Park. SAR members brought
hiker out in helicopter where he was transferred to
an ambulance and taken to hospital.
20. NWE Region - 26 Aug. - 24 Terrace SAR members responded to search
over 2 days for a kayaker who went over in the Clore
River, near Terrace. On Sunday August 27, SAR teams
continued search to no avail. RCMP have stood search
down and incident is closed.
21. VIR Region - 26 Aug. - 2 Nanaimo SAR members responded to assist
a male lost on Mt Benson, near Nanaimo. Male had a
cell phone and SAR members talked him out of the area.
22. NWE Region - 27 Aug. - 4 Terrace Water rescue assisted by
5 members of the Terrace Fire Rescue Unit responded
to rescue of 4 teenagers stranded in the Kalum River
near Terrace. A small truck had driven over 100-foot
bank landing in the river. 3 teenage males had
managed to get out of truck and made it to shore. A
4th occupant, a girl, age 14, had been swept down
river 3 kilometres. She was found on the shore by the
SAR team. Girl had extreme hypothermia and was taken
to hospital by BCAS.
23. CTL Region - 27 Aug. - 6 Osoyoos SAR responded to search for an
80-year-old Japanese tourist who went missing during
an orchard tour. She ended up a few kilometres away
then phoned her party on a cell phone. She was
located and escorted back to her group.
24. CTL Region - 27 Aug. - 2 Kelowna Water Rescue responded to report
of a capsized boat in Okanagan Lake off Braelock Road,
Kelowna. On arrival found that the boat had been
uprighted by passersby and brought to shore. No
victims.
25. SWE Region - 27 Aug. - 3 North Shore Rescue assisted by 4 North
Vancouver Fire personnel rescued an injured mountain
biker on the Boogyman trail, near Mount Seymour Park.
26. CTL Region - 27 Aug. - 4 Vernon SAR responded to search for 2
elderly boaters who were overdue returning from a trip
on Okanagan Lake between Kelowna and Vernon. The
boaters were located in good condition.
27. SEA Region - 27 Aug. - 4 Rossland SAR responded to search for 2
overdue males stranded in the Granite mountain area,
5 Km north of Rossland when their vehicle broke down.
The 2 males were located. A passing motorist had given
them a jump-start and the were located coming down the
road.
28. VIR Region - 28 Aug. - Lake Cowichan SAR will be responding to
search for a missing male who had failed to return home
on the 27 August. SAR will commence shortly after first
light on Monday, 28th August.
BODY RECOVERY:
On 26 August 00, members of the All Island SAR team assisted RCMP in
the search for human remains south of Jungle Beach, near Skidegate.
EVIDENCE SEARCH:
On 27 August 00, 7 Central Okanagan SAR members assisted RCMP in an
evidence search, for a weapon, in the Mission Creek Park area of
Kelowna.
MISCELLANEOUS
On 22 August 00, a campground had to be evacuated due to an ammonia
leak at the arena in Golden. Most of the campers returned to the
campground; however 3 campers went to a hotel.
BCAS ASSIST
On 22 August 00, 4 Hope SAR members responded to assist BCAS with
transport of a heavy patient who had suffered an unconscious collapse.
On arrival, SAR team was advised that assistance was not required.
URBAN INTERFACE FIRE(S):
On 26 August 00, MOF responded to a fire in the back yard of a
residence in Bonnington, 15 kms west of Nelson. Fire Department and
2 Forestry IA teams responded. Fire was brought under control without
buildings or property being impacted.
