Significant occurrences:
1. SWE Region - 23 Jun. - UPDATE Bul.#2600, item 7 refers. On 15 July,
55 searchers from Kent/Harrison, Chilliwack, Central
Fraser Valley, Surrey, Mission, Ridge Meadows,
Lion's Bay, and Hope SAR groups participated in the
search. Nothing tangible located and search was stood
down.
2. SWE Region - 10 Jul. - 11 Kent/Harrison SAR members responded to
RCMP request for assistance in locating and overdue
logger on the east side of Harrison Lake. The logger
was located and brought out.
3. CTL Region - 10 Jul. - 2 Kelowna Water Rescue members responded to
report of a burning boat at Westbank on Okanagan Lake.
One person was rescued and brought to shore.
4. SWE Region - 10 Jul. - 9 Mission SAR members responded to rescue of
an injured person at Cascade Falls, east of Mission.
On arrival it was found that adult female was deceased
and ropes were used to recover the body, which was
turned over to the coroner.
5. VIR Region - 10 Jul. - A total of 25 PEP Air members from Vancouver
Island Region with 6 planes assisted RCC in the search
for an overdue aircraft. The missing Piper was en
route from Chilco Lake to Friday Harbour in San Juan
Islands. PEP Air was tasked to conduct search from
Comox south to Friday Harbour at first light 11 July.
On 11 July. A CF search aircraft located wreckage of
the overdue plane in a mountainous area near Chilco
Lake, south west of Alexis Creek.
6. SWE Region - 10 Jul. - 22 Chilliwack SAR volunteers responded
following report of a person trapped on a logjam in
the Vedder River, near Chilliwack. A search of the
area failed to locate any signs of any person. RCMP
determined report was unsubstantiated and terminated
search.
7. NWE Region - 10 Jul. - 10 Bulkley Valley SAR members assisted RCMP
in search for missing female last seen 8 July.
Elements of PEP Air also assisted in search. On
13 July missing person contacted friend from a logging
camp to which she had walked out. She was apparently
okay. RCMP is continuing to investigate.
8. VIR Region - 11 Jul. - 10 Saltspring Island SAR members responded
to request from RCC to assist in search for one of
two boaters, who had capsized their boat in the Ganges
Harbour area, late 10 July. One person was rescued;
however the second person is still missing. Coast
Guard transported SAR members to Second and Third
Sister, vicinity of Ganges Harbour, where searches
were conducted, with no sign(s) of missing male being
found.
9. SWE Region - 11 Jul. - 7 Pemberton SAR members responded to request
from BCAS to assist in rescue of an injured female
from the Joffery Lake hiking trail, near Pemberton.
She was removed from area by stretcher and turned over
to BCAS staff for transport to hospital. She had
sustained a broken arm and various other injuries.
10. CTL Region - 11 Jul. - 22 SAR members from Hope, Keremeos,
Penticton and Oliver assisted RCMP and BC Parks in
search for a male reported missing in Lightening Lakes
area of Manning Park. Witnesses reported seeing the
male disrobe and dive into one of the lakes. He then
walked naked into the bush. SAR members located male.
He was disoriented and unaware of how he lost his
clothes or how he came to be in the park. He was taken
to hospital. However, it was later reported subject
discharged himself from hospital and was attempting
to hitch a ride back to Manning Park.
11. VIR Region - 12 Jul. - 30 Ladysmith SAR and 1 PEP Air aircraft
with 4 members onboard responded to search for a
57-year-old male hiker, who failed to return from a
hike in the Hart Lake area on 8 July. Extensive air
and ground search of the area failed to locate the
missing male. 8 Ladysmith SAR members continued
search throughout the weekend without success.
12. SWE Region - 13 Jul. - 6 Chilliwack SAR members responded to RCMP
request to assist in rescue of two persons who went
over an embankment in a vehicle at the base of
Chilliwack Mountain. SAR team was stood down prior
to arrival after it was reported that local
Fire Dept and BCAS staff extricated and rescued the
victims.
13. CTL Region - 13 Jul. - 10 Logan Lake SAR members participated in
the search for a missing female SW of Logan Lake. She
had been training her dog and the dog went back to
her vehicle leaving her stranded. She made it out of
the bush on her own suffering only scratches and a
few bruises.
14. SEA Region - 13 Jul. - 6 Kaslo SAR members responded following
report of a flare sighting on Kootenay Lake east of
Kaslo. 2 persons were located on lake in a disabled
boat. They were towed back to shore.
15. CTL Region - 14 Jul. - 2 Peachland SAR members responded
following a report from RCMP of an overturned canoe
on the Okanagan Lake. Search of indicated area failed
to locate an overturned canoe.
16. SWE Region - 14 Jul. - 1 Hope SAR member conferred with RCMP
regarding two persons who had gone horseback riding
on the Cascade Trail between Skagit Valley and Manning
Park. They were to return afternoon 13 July but failed
to do so. After consultation with RCMP and family of
missing person, it was decided that search would be
stood down for the time being, as the two subjects
often stay out longer than anticipated.
17. SWE Region - 14 Jul. - 4 Pemberton SAR members responded to assist
BCAS in rescue of an injured female, from the Nairin
Falls area, near Pemberton. However, SAR Team was
stood down prior to arriving in area.
18. SWE Region - 14 Jul. - 10 North Shore Rescue members assisted in
search for a 9 yr old male, suffering from Down's
Syndrome who had wandered away from the area where
his father was working in the Starlight Way area of
North Vancouver. Four Lions Bay and six Coquitlam
SAR members were on stand by to provide mutual aid
assistance if required. He was located, unharmed,
about 1 1/2 miles from where he went missing.
19. SWE Region - 15 Jul. - 15 Kent/Harrison SAR responded to assist
RCMP in search for a suspected missing person in the
Bench Campground area near Moss Lake. A search of the
area failed to locate anyone. RCMP continues to
investigate report of a bear that had been shot in
the area.
20. SWE Region - 15 Jul. - On 15 July, Pemberton SAR was contacted by
E-Comm Vancouver to report an overturned boat at North
end of Harrison Lake with 3 persons onboard. One
person reported stranded on a logjam. Pemberton SAR
conferred with Kent Harrison SAR to coordinate search.
Later information revealed that male was stranded in a
grounded damaged boat on the Lillooet River, beyond
the north end of Harrison Lake. Due to debris and
navigational hazards in river SAR Managers determined
it was too dangerous to attempt a rescue at night by
boat. Subsequently 442 Sq. was requested to respond
through RCC. At 0150 hrs, 16 July 00, a CF Labrador
helicopter retrieved the man and his dog and
transported them to a logging camp at the north end
of Harrison Lake. Both were in good condition.
21. SEA Region - 16 Jul. - 7 Kaslo SAR assisted by 4 PEP Air members
and one aircraft responded to Duncan Lake, 60 Km north
of Kaslo to search for a 20 year old male who was last
seen attempting to swim across the lake on 15 July.
Extensive water and shoreline searches were conducted
without success. RCMP helicopter and dog team will
continue search on 17 July. SAR Team will confer with
RCMP on 17 July to determine further involvement.
22. SEA Region - 16 Jul. - 5 Cranbrook SAR responded with a helicopter
following report of a female boater floating down the
St. Mary's River without paddles or a lifejacket.
Female was rescued alive and well.
23. SWE Region - 16 Jul. - 7 North Shore Rescue members responded to
report of a missing female in the Hanes Valley behind
Grouse Mountain. Due to location, a helicopter was
used to transport SAR team members into the area.
Female spoke only Korean language, which required
NSR to retain services of the Vancouver Korean Assn
to locate the name of her "home-stay" family in
Vancouver. She had told her home stay family that she
was going to hike up Grouse Mountain via the Gondola
trail. Search was stood down after missing female
contacted family by phone from Surrey. She was alive
and well.
24. CTL Region - 16 Jul. - 12 Vernon SAR responded to perform a cliff
rescue following report of a climber stranded at the
200 foot level on a rock face near Fintry Estates
north of Vernon. SAR members responded to top of rock
face and rescued stranded female climber. She was
mildly hypothermic and severely dehydrated having been
on the rock face for approximately 4 hours. She was
transported to hospital for observation.
25. SWE Region - 16 Jul. - 10 Lion's Bay SAR members responded to
Deeks Lake Trail North of Lion's Bay following report
of an injured hiker. SAR members brought the hiker
suffering an injured ankle out of area to waiting
ambulance.
BODY RECOVERY:
On 11 July 00, a request for assistance was received from the coroner
to assist in recovering the bodies of 4 American citizens whose plane
had crashed in a mountainous area near Chilco Lake, south west of
Alexis Creek. On 15 July 00, the human remains were extricated from
the crash site and were turned over to the Coroner.
On 15 July 00, Mission SAR members responded to assist RCMP in
recovering a body from the Fraser River. Body was recovered and
turned over to the Coroner.
MISCELLANEOUS:
On 15 July, 00, RCC received a call from Caycuse Volunteer Fire
Department to assist in removing a slightly injured 350 pound male
from a gorge in the Nitnat River, Cowichan Lake area.
