Significant occurrences:
1. SEA Region - 21 Jan. - UPDATE. Bul.#0400, item 5 refers. Injured
skier was rescued and taken to Fernie Hospital with
undetermined injuries. Tasking was completed at
1600 hrs, 21 Jan 00.
2. SEA Region - 22 Jan. - UPDATE. Bul.#0400, item 6 refers. 16 Fernie
SAR members had responded to Mount Fernie to search
for a snowboarder missing after an avalanche in the
area. SAR Team was stood down after RCMP located the
snowboarder alive and well.
3. SWE Region - 24 Jan. - 9 Squamish SAR members responded with
helicopter to the Brohm Ridge/Big Bowl area to rescue
an injured male snowmobiler. He was located,
stabilized and taken by helicopter to Squamish
Airport. He was then handed over to BCAS staff for
transport to hospital suffering from a broken femur.
4. VIR Region - 24 Jan. - 12 Cowichan Valley SAR members responded to
search the Cherry Point area for 2 missing boys ages
6 and 11. SAR team was stood down after RCMP reported
both youths had been located alive and well.
5. SWE Region - 24 Jan. - 21 Chilliwack and 13 Kent Harrison SAR
volunteers responded at the confluence of the Fraser
and Harrison Rivers following discovery of an
overturned boat. The boat operator, a fisherman, was
located safe and sound on an island in the middle of
the river.
6. NEA Region - 26 Jan. - 13 Central Cariboo SAR volunteers responded
with snowmobiles to search the Coal Pit Road area for
a missing ski doer. He was located approximately
10 km southwest of his residence at Springhouse Ranch.
He had become disoriented and stayed there overnight.
7. CTL Region - 26 Jan. - 4 Oliver SAR members assisted in the search
for a missing male west of Oliver. The male had been
out looking for his mentally challenged daughter, and
lost his bearings. He later walked out on his own safe
and sound.
8. VIR Region - 26 Jan. - 29 Port Alberni SAR members, augmented by
Coast Guard, searched Tzartus Island for 2 overdue
road surveyors. One helicopter, provided by Forestry,
and one RCMP helicopter were utilized. The
2 surveyors were located by helicopter and ferried
out.
9. SWE Region - 27 Jan. - 7 Squamish SAR members responded to assist
RCMP in rescuing an injured snowmobiler from Brohm
Ridge, 10 km north of Squamish. The subject came out
on his own safe and sound.
10. VIR Region - 29 Jan. - 12 Victoria SAR members and 20 Langford
Fire Dept Rescue members responded to the trestle at
Goldstream Park in Langford following report of a
possible injured/fallen person. Report from scene
indicated what appeared to be a body at the bottom
of a 300-foot ravine at train trestle. On rappelling
down to area SAR members located only debris which
included a cap and some clothing. Search was stood
down pending further RCMP investigation. Search
resumed on 30 Jan after RCMP received report of a
missing 25 year old male and discovery of an unoccupied
vehicle in a parking area of Goldstream Park. Search
was again stood down after RCMP discovered clues, which
led them to believe male is alive and may have gone
into hiding. RCMP investigation is continuing.
11. SWE Region - 29 Jan. - 8 Ridge Meadows SAR members responded
following report of a stranded boat on Pitt Lake. On
arrival SAR team located a boat containing 6 adults
and 2 children aground on a sandbar. Children were
removed to safety and adults remained onboard boat
until morning's high tide.
12. SWE Region - 30 Jan. - 21 Hope SAR members assisted BCAS in
` rescuing an injured male suffering from hypothermia
in the area of the old Kettle Valley railway near the
toll booth. Male was located and transported to
hospital.
13. SWE Region - 30 Jan. - 8 North Shore Rescue responded to rescue a
stranded female snowmobiler in the Thunderbird Ridge
area, north of Grouse Mountain. She was located in
good condition and was brought off the mountain.
14. SWE Region - 30 Jan. - 3 North Shore Rescue members responded to
Mount Seymour following report of 2 missing snow
boarders. They were located alive and well. They had
stopped snow boarding, decided to go for a hike and
were overcome by darkness.
MISCELLANEOUS
On 25 Jan 00, 5 Telkwa Rescue members responded to the Quick area,
just east of Telkwa, at the request of BC Ambulance, to assist with
a patient suffering shortness of breath.
On 26 Jan 00, the Cowichan Valley Emergency Coordinator authorized a
follow-up Critical Incident Stress Debriefing in regards to an
incident in December 1998 which resulted in the discovery of a deceased
male.
