Significant occurrences:
1. VIR Region - 15 Nov. - 20 SAR members from Metchosin, Sooke and
Victoria responded to the Fort Rodd Hill beach area
near Esquimalt Lagoon following report of a
distraught and suicidal male. He was last seen walking
from the Lighthouse toward the Lagoon. CCG Auxiliary
also provided assistance. All search teams were stood
down after RCMP and Saanich Police reported male had
been located in the Saanich/Tillicum area.
2. VIR Region - 16 Nov. 6 Ucluelet SAR members responded to assist
RCMP in search for a distraught missing male who had
been missing for 4 days. Park Warden obtained a
helicopter to assist in the search. SAR team was
stood down on 17 Nov. Missing male was not located
however; search will be conducted inside park by
Park's staff and RCMP members.
3. VIR Region - 16 Nov. - 20 Powell River SAR members responded to
assist RCMP in search for a missing 75 year old male.
Male was located safe and sound.
4. CTL Region - 17 Nov. - 21 SAR members from Penticton, Keremeos and
Oliver responded to search in the Vasseaux Lake area
near the south end of Skaha Lake for a missing hunter.
6 PEP Air members responded with fixed wing aircraft
and a RCMP helicopter was also utilized in search.
Missing hunter was located alive and well. His vehicle
had become stuck and sustained a flat tire. He
remained with his vehicle overnight waiting for
assistance.
5. SWE Region - 17 Nov. - 15 Coquitlam SAR members responded with
helicopter to Bunzen Lake following report of an
injured female hiker. Female had sustained a leg
injury. 5 North Shore and 5 Ridge Meadows SAR
members provided mutual aid assistance. Female was
located and brought out to BCAS and transported to
Eagle Ridge hospital.
6. SWE Region - 17 Nov. - 12 Kent/Harrison SAR members responded to
report of a vehicle down embankment on Bear Mountain
Forest Service Road. SAR members performed a rope
rescue to access vehicle. Two occupants were located
and brought out. One sustained undetermined injuries
and the other was deceased.
7. VIR Region - 18 Nov. - 7 Lake Cowichan SAR members were requested
by RCMP to search for an overdue mushroom picker who
failed to show up back at his car in the Kissinger
Mainline area of Nitinat. SAR members found him safe
and sound about ½ km east of his vehicle. Had become
disoriented by darkness.
8. VIR Region - 19 Nov. - 14 Nanaimo Regional District SAR members
responded to assist RCMP in search for missing elderly
male in the Woodgrove Shopping Centre area. Subject
had been missing since noon on Thursday, November 18.
Nanaimo Transit reported to the RCMP that bus driver
recognized the elderly male and reported he had picked
him up at Dunn Place and dropped him at the ferry
terminal. Police stood down the SAR Team until they
investigated further.
DANGEROUS GOODS
On 17 Nov 99, a natural gas leak, caused by a malfunctioning pressure
relief valve at the BC Gas pumping station in Cranbrook was raised to
Code 2 (Urgent) status due to the potential for explosion and/or fire.
4 residences in the immediate area of the intersection of
7th St North and 17th Ave North were evacuated as a precaution.
Residents were allowed to return home approximately 2 hours later when
the malfunctioning valve had been repaired and situation was under
control. MELP Response Officer, Municipal Emergency Coordinator,
PEP Region Manager, OFC, EPS, RCMP, and Cranbrook Fire Department
monitored the situation.
FLOOD
On 15 Nov 99, heavy rainfall caused a buildup of debris in the
Trout Lake, Mobbs Creek area east of Nakusp, which posed a
considerable threat to nearby residences. Ministry of Environment,
Water Management staff, attended site and authorized contracting
equipment to commence removal of debris. PEP Region Manager
monitored conditions.
EVIDENCE SEARCH
On 21 November, Terrace SAR members were requested by RCMP to search
the Terrace Airport area for evidence relating to the disappearance of
a female, presumed deceased, who has been missing since 1995.
MISCELLANEOUS
On 16 Nov 99, one adult female, a 14 year old child, and a 3 month
old child required assistance in obtaining emergency accommodations
and necessities for 2 days due to their rented accommodations being
impacted by a gaseous odour that the gas company was attempting to
trace. Rented accommodations were also impacted due to a broken
water line overnight. Also believe that due to odour in the house,
the 3 month old child became ill and required medical attention.
